Session 2
Travels to Arcanix and beyond
After the death of Gil the ride towards Arcanix was very quiet. I’d guess that most of us were contemplating our own mortality. Why did Gil die? I could have been any one of us. He was by far the toughest warrior I had ever met and now he’s dead. We traveled until dark when our guide Lydia called a stop for the day. We set up watch with Argent on watch all night with Enalo and Trot on first watch followed by Lydia then Otho with me taking the last watch. Luckily for us we had another uneventful night. He took off early the next day in hopes of making it to Arcanix by early afternoon.
It wasn’t until early afternoon when we first saw the floating towers of Arcanix. It still took another two hours to reach the settlement beneath the city. There are only a few building as we stop in front of the main building. This is also the griffon stable for those who don’t have magic means to reach the towers. Out of the building is a bored looking human. “What business do you have?” We explain that Passage has been attacked by what appeared to be Valenar Elves and that we are here to met with the Royal Warlord and Minister of Magic. The asked was “No one is allowed up to the city without permission from the Royal Warlord.” We diplomatically explained the urgency of the situation. Eventually he consented and gave us the griffons and we all traveled up to the city. Upon our arrive we were met by a messenger who took us to a waiting room. From the sounds of the messenger we could be waiting a while. Lydia stepped up to the messenger and dropped a bombshell on all of us. We all heard her say “Do you know who I am?” The messenger shook his head and Lydia continued “I am Queen Aurelio of Breland and you will tell your warlord and minister I am not to be kept waiting!” Needless to say we were all shocked by this revelation. A lot of things began to fall into place. She wasn’t a very good guide, she never carried a weapon, and she was very arrogant to all of us even though she was only a guide. The messenger returned quickly and we quickly gain an audience with the Royal Warlord and Minister of Magic. We all stood in the back of the room watching all of this unfold before our eyes. She explained the attack and the idea of sneaking her out of town while the guards made a grand display of taking the queen out the other side of town. This would explain the lack of Valenar elves we met heading out the south end of town. The leaders decided we needed to send a message to Sharn to ask for assistance in this time of need. This is when we became involved in their discussions. The first person they called before them was the mage named Prechrysler who gave us the griffons to fly up to Arcanix. They said “Even though your action resulted in a positive result you directly disobeyed a direct order to not anyone up to the city without permission from the city first. As a result you will be expelled from the school of magic. But if you are willing to help these adventures take the message to Sharn we will give up a positive recommendation to enter Morgrave University.” That was when we found out that we were going to be taking a letter to Sharn explaining everything that had transpired. In the morning we will be given griffons to ride to Sharn along with a sealed letter.
I must say the accommodation here are superb, it might be because we helped rescue the queen, but we each had our own rooms. My room had the softest bed I’ve ever slept in and was very spacious. I’m pretty sure these are the nobles and other dignitaries sleeping quarters. I was awaken by a servant who informed me that we were to eat breakfast in the main dining hall and we should be ready to leave right after breakfast. When I arrived most everyone was already there eating the last home cooked meal for a while. I made sure to eat some fruit and other fresh items as trail rations are most definitely lacking a fresh taste. They had griffons waiting for us out on the receiving platform. The minister briefly covered what we were supposed to do and wished up luck. Griffons are not the easiest creatures to ride. Griffons are heavy creatures so between wing flaps they drop several feet then their powerful wings push themselves back up to where they were. So you go through moments of weightlessness followed by feelings of weighing twice your normal weight. I don’t think I will ever get use to riding these creatures. The only one who looks like they are enjoying themselves is that crazy goblin, Enalo. Must be because he is use to riding his crocodile, Trot. I must confess the view from the griffons is amazing. You can see for miles and miles. You also come to realize how big the world is really. We rode for hours and hours and flew over a couple small towns and some cultivated lands, but mostly wilderness. Late in the afternoon we were riding along each of us within our own thought. When out of, what seemed like nowhere, came a large dragon-like creature with a huge stinger on the end of its tail. I later learned that this creature is called a wyvern. He was very interested in the griffons for lunch. The problem is that we had to control the griffons well enough to get them into good attack positions. As I previously mentioned the only one of us who had any riding experience is Enalo. His skills were unmatched he was continually able to ride his griffon and get it into good attack positions. As for the rest of us we did what we could which mostly consisted of not falling off the griffons when they reared up or dropped to avoid attacks. Although several griffons were clawed the stinger stung none of the griffons or us. Judging by the size of the stinger if it didn’t outright kill us it would of hurt a lot. Enalo later said that the stinger is also poisonous and that could have possible killed us as well. Looks like the Traveler of the Dark Six was watching over me today. Enalo sensed that the griffons were still freaked out and that it might be a good idea to set down as soon as possible. Luckily for us a few minutes later we came across a very small town. We set the griffons down just out side of town and walked them to what looked like an inn with stables. The innkeeper by the name of Otis said that he didn’t care if we kept the griffons in the barn or not. Otis apparently was a farmer and he must have been drinking most of the afternoon. We put the griffons into the barn and headed inside. We were served by our drinks and later our meals by Otis’s daughter Katie. Katie was not very attractive and a very large girl, she couldn’t be much more than thirteen or fourteen. Otho asked the innkeeper if he could play sing for the crowd. Crowd? There was the four of us, Otis and his daughter and three farmers. Otho may not have the voice you would expect to be a singer, its kind of whiny and high pitched, but damn the little kobold sang his balls off in that little inn. I do believe that Katie was especially taken by his singing. We found out the name of the town was Negatory, kind of a strange name. After a couple glasses of descent wine I was ready for bed. I headed upstairs along with the rest of the guys and went to sleep. Enalo for whatever reason slept out with Trot in the barn. He is a strange one.
